I was at a stop light when another car rear-ended me. We exchanged insurance info and driver’s license info. I didn’t call the police because the damage seemed minimal. I reported it to my insurance company 21st Century Insurance and my adjuster contacted the other driver’s insurance company Reliant General Insurance. After a couple weeks the Reliant adjuster said that they couldn’t contact the other driver and would deny the claim after 30 days of the date of the claim unless a police report was filed or if there was a witness. So I filed a police report, which the police department said was fine to do even a couple weeks after the accident. The officer who did the report even said it looked like the other driver’s fault, since I was rear-ended at a stop light. And he couldn’t understand why my claim would be denied just like that too. Both insurance companies knew I had filed the police report, but well after 30 days Reliant still said they’d deny the claim because they can’t contact and speak with their insured client/driver. The damage is minimal, but is still estimated at approximately $900, possibly a little more. Plus there’s the cost of a rental car. My adjuster said that I could pay the $500 deductible and have the repairs done, in which they would pay for the rest beyond the $500 deductible, except for the car rental for 3 days (because that’s not on my policy), and then they’d go after the other driver in collections. But that there would be a chance that I don’t get the $500 and the cost for the rental car back. I called the California Department of Insurance and they said I could do what my adjuster suggested or try to take the other driver to small claims court. And that person said that cases like mine unfortunately happen in California often. This just doesn’t seem right. I’ve been paying for my car insurance for years and when I need to use it it seems like my car insurance company isn’t trying hard enough to help me out in a case that isn’t my fault. Plus the other driver is a paying client of the other insurance company and we have his information. But the other insurance company can deny my claim just because they can’t contact him and speak with him, because that driver isn’t cooperating. So I either forget all about this and deal with the damages on my car (while it worsens and cracks more over time) or I pay the $500 deductible and the cost for a car rental for a few days and risk the chance of not getting reimbursed for that, or I spend possibly even more money to try to take the other driver to small claims court (including maybe more if I need to get an attorney or need consultation services). Are there other options that won’t cost me about $600 or more? I’m definitely switching to another insurance company after this. My adjuster doesn’t seem to care about my claim case. I kept having to contact him to try to get status updates instead of him contacting me. And it’s been over 3 months now since the accident happened. What upsets me more about all this is that people and insurance companies can get away with things like this. While honest insured drivers have to deal with these hassles and costs."

I am 19 years old and I have never had insurance (I have had my license for a year). There is a broker right now charging me $508 to be insured for the whole year. Before finding this broker the cheapest I could find was at State Farm and they were charging $720/year. The thing is I was told I would be charged $33/Month by the broker which would total $396 for the year. Is the remaining $102 their (the brokers) commission? What do you think?

I am dealing with a claim where a guy rear ended me. he is denying liability (I know this as police had to be called), he said I cut him up and caused the bump. On Christmas Day I went out in the car to pick up some drinks from the petrol station and on the way out of the station I bumped someones car. I stopped and got out to give them my details (name, address and phone number) and then went home. In the panic of the moment I think I just wanted to get home as it was Christmas Day and I didn’t hang around to take photos, ask for witnesses or discuss options with the other driver, which in hindsight I regret and realise was stupid. When I got home, the guy called me up and, again with the stupid mistakes, I said that I would rather settle outside of insurance; the driver wasn’t keen on the idea at first and wanted to settle through the insurance company but I couldn’t call them until the next week as they were closed for Christmas. He texted me the next day saying that he was going to get a quote from a garage and got back to me later with a quote for 400 through a ‘friend of a friend’s garage’. At this point I was a bit suspicious and the amount seemed very high for what I thought was not a lot of damage but at the same time he said that he either wanted to do it like that or through the insurance and I really didn’t want to loose my no-claims discount as insurance for young male drivers is very high without the no-claims. In the end I decided to pay him, not without a certain bitterness owing to the fact that he was pressuring me for an immediate decision, which also made me suspicious. Having sent the cheque for 400, he kept up communications initially and let me know that he’d received it. He said that he would send me a copy of the receipt from the garage for my records but once he received the cheque I never heard back and now cannot get a reply. Bit long-winded for a question but that’s the background story, my question is two-fold: 1. Can I do anything about it? It’s more the principle than the money that bothers me, I know that I caused damage to his car but I now suspect it wasn’t as much as he claimed. 2. Does 400 sound like too much or should I stop worrying about it? I hit the back corner of his car with the back corner of mine, and he later told me that I had cracked the rear bumper, which needed replacing. I’m not sure of the make of the car but I think it may have been a Ford Fiesta or something similar. I would really appreciate any help as it’s weighing on my mind… I don’t like people walking over me. At least if the amount he claimed sounds reasonable I can put it down to him being a wanker but the amount claimed being fair and forget about the whole thing."
